About the book:
Michael Moser’s New Contributions to the History of the Ukrainian Language is a collection of scholarly essays that examine the history of the Ukrainian language from the beginnings to date. The collected essays discuss the verdict of the infamous Valuev Directive (“Valuev Circular”) of 1863 that Ukrainian is “a language that did not, does not, and cannot exist” and argue that in fact, Ukrainian is a language with an intriguing past, present, and future. Contrary to widespread beliefs, the history of the Ukrainian language is as deeply rooted in the past as that of any other Slavic language. As any other language, Ukrainian has developed on an autochthonous basis and has at the same time been in contact with other languages. Moser discusses selected chapters from the history of Ukrainian-Church Slavonic, Ukrainian-Polish, and Ukrainian-Russian language contacts as reflected in Ukrainian written sources. He demonstrates that the elaboration of Modern Standard Ukrainian was the result of complex efforts of codification that was carried out under specific historical circumstances. He examines specific problems of the history of the Ukrainian language in Galicia, Transcarpathia, and North America and discusses the impact of language policy on the more recent history of the Ukrainian language.
